What Are Dental Bridges?

by | Jul 17, 2020 | Bridge, Dental Health, Treatments

When you are missing one or more teeth, your dentist can close, or “bridge” the gap in your smile using dental bridges. False teeth called pontics are placed in the gap and are anchored to natural teeth neighboring the gap, which are called abutment teeth. The abutment teeth serve to support the pontics. Pontics can be made from a variety of materials, such as gold, porcelain, or alloys. Typically, porcelain is used because it blends best with the natural color of our teeth.

There are 4 different types of dental bridges: traditional, cantilever, Maryland, and implant supported. Most often a traditional bridge is used, which involves cementing a crown onto both abutment teeth to hold the pontics in place. This is used when there are natural teeth on both sides of the gap.

What are the benefits of a dental bridge?

Dental bridges offer several benefits, including:

  • restoring your smile
  • restoring the ability to properly chew
  • restoring speech and pronunciation
  • maintaining the shape of your face
  • re-adjusting your bite to properly distribute the force when you chew
  • preventing remaining teeth from moving out of their correct position

What is the process of getting a dental bridge?

Getting a dental bridge involves multiple visits to the dentist. During the first visit, the dentist will prepare the abutment teeth by re-contouring the teeth and removing some enamel, so that a crown, or cap can be placed to support the bridge. The dentist will also take an impression of the teeth, so a model of the bridge, crown, and pontics can be made. A temporary bridge may be placed during the initial visit.

During the second visit, the temporary bridge will be removed, and the official one will be placed and adjusted. Multiple visits may be required to ensure the bridge is properly fitted. Once fitted, the dentist will cement it in place.

How long does a dental bridge last?

Dental bridges can last between 5 to 15 years, and sometimes longer. With proper oral care, you can expand the life span of your dental bridge. Make sure to brush regularly, floss daily, and visit the dentist twice annually for your routine cleanings.
